Why are we leaving New York? Why are we selling a house that we painstakingly renovated to exactly reflect us? Why are we abandoning our careers? Why are we moving away from our families? So many “whys”, so many questions about what is pushing us to embark on this crazy adventure.
The short answer is, why not? Why live for the next adventure and constantly count down until our next trip? Why settle for a life we didn’t want?
The longer answer is of course more complicated. While neither of us wanted a traditional life, somehow we got stuck there. We both pursued unfulfilling careers, bought a house, adopted some pets and worked extremely hard to be able to afford to live on Long Island. But the more we began to travel, internationally mostly, the more out of place we felt at home. There was not enough nature, nothing around to discover, to stand in awe of. People live too close to each other, it’s too expensive, it’s too busy. It isn’t us. We crave adventure, we long to explore new places and to accomplish what others think is crazy or impossible. And while we have incredible families and friends, something was always missing for us. Something that only came alive inside us when we were exploring the bush in South Africa, trekking through Peru or island hopping in the Philippines.
We recognized that we wanted to live in the moment more. We wanted freedom to travel more and lead a simpler life. But where would we go? Well, for a while the plan was to move to Pennsylvania. Ashley spent a lot of her childhood in the Poconos, and her family has a vacation home up there where we spend a lot of time. Something about the woods, the mountains and the lakes speak to us in a way that Long Island never did. And so that was the plan until March 2018, when we road tripped through New Zealand.
New Zealand was one our favorite trips and boy, did driving through the entire country change our perspective on what we wanted out of life. We fell in love with the scenery and the long drives. We spent most of our time outdoors hiking and exploring. We got to see so many different parts of the country and got to appreciate its wild and natural beauty. That trip truly changed something in us, it lit a fire and we started to see a different path to follow. It seemed our plans got sidetracked by a new dream to travel across the country full time in an RV.
At first, this seemed outrageous and risky to us, but we couldn’t let it go, couldn’t get past it. So after discussing logistics, our finances, and the challenges the journey would likely bring, we decided to jump right off the cliff and go for it. We make a pretty awesome team and we knew in our bones that we could do this. So, we put the house that we love up for sale and sold it in two days. That’s when we knew for sure, this was the right move, the right path for us. And so began our journey to full time RVing.
